When we left America in 2008 for the island, we had no idea how deep the Jamaican people would root themselves into our hearts. A beautiful people. Relationships we guard closely.

We arrived on Jamaican soil in August of 2008, the night before Tropical Storm Gustaf! We stayed in a hotel for 3 nights with no electricity, water and little food! It was a blast! We were running on sheer adrenalin!

After those 3 nights, we realized we wouldn't be able to afford much more so we went in search of "free housing"!! The Bible College where we were assigned to work didn't have a place for us so we contacted the A/G children's home in the same town as the Bible College. Thankfully, they let us stay in a room alongside a Missionary Associate couple and during this time, Renee's school and the Bible College classes had both started. We were working on visas, our shipping container, having Renee's uniforms made, eating out where ever we could find. Crazy days for sure!!

I will never forget the day our shipping container arrived! We were so excited to set up house in Spaldings, the town next door to Christiana. The freshmen class came over and helped us deal with boxes and paper so we could store them for the departure which at that time seemed so very far away!

We traveled to the A/G churches on Sundays. We got acquainted with the pastors, preached and did music in the churches, fellowshipped with the congregations. In our travels we got to know the layout of the land, traveling from north to south, and east to west. We taught in the Bible College, attended faculty meetings, Board of Administration meetings, missions meetings, participated in devotions, had the students to the house hundreds of times! made lots of American goodies, preached in chapels, prayer meetings and anything we could do to be connected. We attended National conferences, conventions, General meetings. We conducted Children's Ministries Seminars across the island, taught clowning, ballooning, face paintings, how to conduct kids crusades and the like. We also led the way for the refurbishing of a church building and restarting it through the momentum of several different teams. We fell in love with the people of Bath, Jamaica.

Both homes in which we lived served as a Bed and Breakfast for many people! Evangelists, guests and friends. We were blessed in so many ways as we opened our lives and our home.

We got to know people in both towns in which we lived. Spaldings and Mandeville. We found different ways to love on people. That is what we were there for. Our assignment was the Bible College but a missionary can't become so one-tracked that they teach and then go home and do nothing else. Everything we do is to connect people to the God that has sent us there.

Renee's busy life was another point of contact. From dance to art to violin! From her school days at Belair to PTA. We met so many wonderful friends along the way. She played her violin for the Governor General, the Japanese Ambassador and gave her Valedictorian Speech in front of the Minister of Education who was so very complimentary.

Our four years of ministry in Jamaica are over although friendships and memories will last a life time! 2012 brings us to a new ministry, that of Den being a lecturer in Valley Forge Christian College and Renee being a student at the same college. During the next two years we will be itinerating to raise and secure the budget to go on to the next field. We don't know yet where that will be but stay tuned! We will be in touch!

One of my favorite sayings is "It is bettter to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." Maybe the reason I love the saying is because as missionaries we are always moving on to another situation or place. It would be easy to say, "I won't be here long so I am not going to make friends" or to say " It is too painful to think about the goodbye so I won't build a relationship in the first place."

I am going to continue to choose to love, knowing how painful goodbyes really are.

An early start. A tough day. Safe flights. Melancholy. Sadness. Homesick for what was. Missing school. Missing our students. Missing Jamaica. Everything hit at once.

When we arrived at the Newark airport, there was something wrong with Ryan's car that he had left there when he flew to Jamaica for Renee's graduation. The car went in the shop. We went to a hotel. We were so praying that the car would be repaired quickly but it wasn't so we had to stay in the hotel another night.

We left Newark on Friday the 29th and drove to Valley Forge Christian College. Our next place to lay our heads!

The college is so gracious to let us stay in the dorm rooms until our shipment arrives. So the four of us are college kids together!

We have no idea how long it will be till we get our belongings from Jamaica. The container was held extra time. One hangup was our lock box. They wanted it opened because the officials thought we were shipping a weapon. Denny had to give approval for that box to be broken into. It is simply a document safe, where our passports usually reside! Lesson learned! Next time we need to tape the key to the box so they don't have to destroy it!!

I was really anxious to go to church yesterday, thought we would enjoy some Fourth of July flavor or celebration. Unfortunately we chose one that just lost its pastor so there was no celebrating! Renee and Ryan went to a church where Ryan was on the worship team while he was a student here at VFCC. We met up at a Mexican restaurant and enjoyed our day together.

A really special thing happened at church though. The first persons to greet us are from Jamaica. Yup, I cried.

At this point we are looking for some bottles to hold all these tears.....
The dreaded day had arrived. When we first opened our eyes that morning it was a feeling of, "Do we have to do this?"

Jamaica had gotten into our hearts and we knew we had to let go, and it was proving to be very heart-wrenching. Seeing Renee go through this phase was tearing our guts out as well as our own personal feelings. We had tried to keep our emotions at bay for a couple of months but Sunday, June 24 everything broke loose.

First it was the goodbyes at the church. They honored the graduates so that was really special for Renee, they prayed over our family, they loved and loved.

We picked up a pizza to have at the house since our driver was to arrive at 3 in the afternoon. Little did we realize we would have a busy house once again! One of Renee's closest girl friends and her mom came by, some people from church came by. I was busy tending to the last minute things in the house, Den had to return the van to First Assembly that we had borrowed since the selling of the car we used took place on Friday. Ryan was running with Dad, Renee was entertaining guests, Mom was going crazy tending to last minute giveaways and such! It was a crazy and wonderful day.

Then the inevitable had to happen. Rowan, one of our students, came in with the bus to take us to Montego Bay. That dreaded moment had arrived. Tears galore as we pulled out of the driveway, tears galore the farther we went from Mandeville, tears galore....little did we realize there were still more in there to come out.

A few months back, Den in his fatherly wisdom, knew that this was not going to be an easy move for Renee, booked a resort for us to debrief before hitting the ground running in the states. We were there from Sunday evening till Wednesday morning. Although at the beginning of our stay we didn't know if Renee was going to be able to enjoy it, ultimately it was the best thing we could have ever done.

It was a good thing we had Ryan with us. He was able to distract her broken heart and try to make lemonade out of lemons. To say this was easy would be a lie! But I am so glad we were able to make Renee smile while being at the beach rather than in a makeshift place here in the States. God is so good!
This year there was a personal graduation that was the highlight. Renee is a graduate. She has been at the top of her class every year here in Jamaica and that is quite a feat.

The language (Patois), the work load (British model), the culture adjustments from the states to Jamaica (Renee has been a missionary kid most of her life, but she experienced 8 years living in the US), the hot temperatures, the differences in every part of her life made her adjustment huge and she did it with grace, perseverance and rose to the top!

When she entered Belair School she was in the 1st Form (7th grade). When that year finished her
teacher suggested that we consider moving her to the 3rd Form
(9th grade) as she was advancing so rapidly. We prayed about the move
and told the administration that we would try it for a couple of months,
but with all of the adjustments to missionary living, we just weren't
sure she would be able to handle the workload with all of the other
challenges. She again was at the top of her class at the end of 9th grade so we realized that we had made the right decision.

In Jamaica you graduate in 5th form (11th grade) and Upper 6th form, (13th grade). So because of her skipping 8th grade she graduated in Jamaica!

She was called to the principle's office a couple of weeks ago and they informed her that she was chosen to be the valedictorian. To say she was honored is an understatement. Last evening she received the outstanding academic award, the faculty award, she played a violin solo, she received beautiful plaques and trophy's and lots of affirmation! God is so good.

I will post the pics to take you through the wonderful ceremony!
Pastor Dwight's message was "Not Many Father's", taken from I Corinthians 4. There were two points, Spiritual Fathers Warn and Don't Shame, and Spiritual Fathers bring life through the Gospel.

It was a beautiful service. We had invited a couple and only the wife came. She so desperately needs to be in a church where she can mature and find relationships. I do pray that she comes back although her contact person (us) won't be there. We introduced her to some of the ladies. May God just keep drawing her back.

The words of the worship songs were meant just for her. I really sensed as though everything was "God-Directed" for her.

Then the fathers were recognized through a powerpoint with photos of them and things their children said about them. I think Denny was surprised to see his photos and comments from Renee. It was beautiful. They were each given a notebook journal. It was so nice.

We went to a restaurant for lunch and enjoyed one another. Of course, thinking about our last days in Jamaica and what this week will hold did bring a melancholy feel to our lunch but we will cry through the next week and work the sadness through our emotional system and think about the wonderful times that we have experienced with precious people here on the island.
She was born to dance! I have observed a lot of dance classes and recitals over the years. Some children like it, some are pushed to do it, some resent it, some are scared to death of it, and some just plain live to dance. Renee dances in the house, walking along the path, dances all the time!

When I was a kid, there weren't dance studios in town or after school classes. I guess I was deprived. I do think that if there had been I would have asked mommy to let me join. I have this jealousy of Renee when she dances, wishing I had the chance! Now I am too sedentary to make a split or leap across the stage!

Last evening was Renee's last dance recital in Jamaica and for that I am sad. I must admit I only had eyes for my girl last night. Now that she is entering a new stage in her life, I have to wonder when the next time will be that I will see her dance under the stage lights. So I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. As a matter of fact, I have gone to the rehearsals every day for the last two weeks. I became a dance mom I guess I could say!
She danced three dances and they were stunningly beautiful. One was a duet that she actually choreographed, the next was a duet with a male dancer that is from the Bahamas, and the third dance was her entire dance class. Just beautiful.
And a great day it was! Since the countdown for departure has begun we have been clicking things off the list! I think this might be the last "tourist" day we will have until we leave Mandeville and head to Montego Bay to fly out.

Jamaica Zoo is located in Lacovia, Saint Elizabeth. It was only an hour from the house. It had real animals, haha! and a restaurant.
When you first enter there is a playground and then a place where you are able to handle certain animals. The certain animals that Renee and I really don't want to touch!
True anywhere you live, yet I find on the "mission field" children make ministry opportunities that sometimes you would never anticipate. I know this to be true because we lived on the "field" without children in the eighties and now with our girl on this field since 2008.

From violin performance opportunities, dance recitals, art exhibitions, school life to birthday parties! Renee's birthday falls right in the middle of exams so we try to schedule her party around the school exam schedule so her birthday party was on Saturday and what a time it was! On Friday night we had a photo shoot with 7 girls and on Saturday we met at the neighborhood pool with 15!

I called it the 16th birthday/graduation/farewell party on the invitations. Most exams were finished by Friday, so all the kids were in a celebratory mood! Because Renee's birthday falls in hurricane season I also had to pray for good weather. Can't have a pool party in the hurricane! Thank God the weather was good on Saturday and the party a success! After four years of the same school friendships, our relationships with the parents have deepened and God has used our family to bless not just the students lives but also the parents. They come from all walks of life and we have one common denominator....our babies!
Happy 16th Birthday Sugar!

I turned 40 the year you were was born. It seems like yesterday! Here are 16 reasons and counting why I admire you.

1. You are an artist, you have shown me that there are no mistakes on the canvas. You just cover it with gesso and start over.

2. You are a dancer, you have shown me freedom. Freedom of movement and expression. Freedom to display the joy that just has to come out!

3. You are a violinist, you have shown me that even the most difficult of pieces can be mastered. Music isn't to be played, music is to be felt.

4. You are a voracious reader. You enjoy reading a book over and over and over. Your books are your friends and you think deserve another read!

5. You are a diligent student. You have shown me that studying is worthwhile, not just for good grades but for the pure pleasure of working hard and being proud of it.

6. You forgive. You have shown me that relationships are special, holding on to hurt feelings really doesn't make anyone feel better, so why not just let them go.

7. You don't fight. You have had opportunity to bite back yet you hold your tongue. You have shown me self control and discipline in how you manage your conflict.

8. You stand tall. Something I have never been privileged to do since I am so short. You hold your shoulders back and walk with confidence. You have shown me that you love how God made you.

9. You love God's word. You have shown me that reading your Bible is a given, even when the night is late and you need to sleep. His word is important to you.

10. You love music. Filling your ipod was so easy. You like all kinds. You have shown me new artists and music worth listening to. Your ipod is inspirational, playful, romantic, and classical!

11. You are easy to please. You have shown me that you are not demanding and manipulative. You are easy, not high maintenance!

12. You are so grateful. You are grateful for small things and huge sacrifices. You recognize limitations and are so appreciative not just of your family but even those who do the smallest thing for you. You are thankful.

13. You pray. Praying just seems natural to you. You pray for me and instantly I am changed. You've shown me simple faith, simple trust.

14. You are flexible. Typical here something can be scheduled and after a lot of work it is cancelled. You just roll with it. That amazes me.

15. You are a leader. You know where you are going. You have goals and desires, wants and wishes and are figuring out how to bring them to fruition. You are a leader of people, you are a great motivator and teacher, in dance, in church, in teaching violin.

16. You are beautiful. You have shown me that it is not just outward beauty that matters, but what is on the inside that truly counts.

I am so grateful for you my little girl who stands taller than me!
In Rest we took a left toward Alligator Hole! Sounds like a fun place, doesn't it!

When we arrived at Alligator Hole, it was a man sitting at a picnic table and a couple small buildings. I headed toward one of the buildings and he called out to me...hey, I'm over here! Deacon was his name and he was our guide! I asked him about the alligators and how many we would see....his response, none! We have crocodiles! OH GREAT!
Finally yesterday was determined the day, and what a great day it was!

We left the house at 8:30 and headed to the South Coast. Our first stop was Monymusk Sugar Cane Fields. There is a huge production for the making of sugar cane. After speaking to persons that work there we find that production had just stopped for the day so we couldn't tour the facility. We saw the fields, the wagons, the workers residences, the factory itself and the steam coming out of the smokestacks.

We left the sugar factory and headed north and then west through RaceCourse, Springfield, and landed at Milk River Hotel and Spa.

The sign that directed us to the Spa said #1 in the World. How could we not visit a place with that kind of credential?!

It was really a fun stop! We enjoyed our 15 minute mineral bath and lunch there at the hotel.
When we left the spa we noticed a sign for Farquhars Beach. It appeared to be really close to the spa so we went to check it out!

Surprise it was a fishing village not a swimming beach. So here are some shots from our visit there rather than a swim!
Den was invited to preach at Abundant Life A/G in Stony Hill today. It was a beautiful day inside and out. We have had rain for over a week and today at departure time 7 a.m. the sun was shining, the birds were singing and we made the long 2 hour trek to Stony Hill, just a little north of Kingston.
The church was celebrating Children's Day and what a special day it was. There were children galore! There were so many people in the church that all chairs were used and it was standing room only!
One of the Bible College students daddy is the pastor. Machelle accompanied us to Stony Hill with her belongings to return to her parents home for the summer.

And what a surprise when we arrived at the church, we jumped out of the car and she said. I have a presentation to make! She presented us with a monetary gift collected from the students and surprised we were! What generosity and kindness. It totally took us off guard!
We have been wanting to purchase a particular book as a keepsake from our time in Jamaica. This afternoon before leaving Kingston we were able to find it! Now to find all the students to have them sign it....that might be a challenge! We will give it our best effort though..we love them so much.
Getting ready to leave the island has become quite painful.

In 2008 we brought a little 12 year old with Polly Pockets and Barbie dolls. In 2012 we will leave with a beautiful 16 year old mature young lady. Renee is an A+ Missionary Kid. I can't even call her a child anymore. She is much taller than me. She is much more advanced than I was at sixteen. She is a thinker, an analyzer, a reader, a motivator. She is a leader, so talented and confident in who she is.

This week, however, has begun the emotional departure roller coaster for her and thus for me. We are spending alot of time with tears, tight embraces, and snuggles. What can you do when words don't fit and the realization of leaving is boring a hole straight into our heart every waking moment?

What has become an easy pattern in our 34 years of ministry has now become a stark reality in a teenager's life and it isn't so easy anymore. Picking up and moving on and loving on new people in a new place isn't something that she wants or even cares to navigate in.

Since we have had Ryan and Renee, Denny often says our children will either love travel and adventure or they will never leave the county line of the town they settle in! I am still not sure how they are going to be in their adult years. It really could go either way!

So tonight with a month to go in this beautiful land I dedicate this song to Renee. She is my gift from heaven.
The three missionary families that remain are leaving around the same time. One couple leaves the island June 23, we leave June 27, and the other couple leaves June 30. At this present time no other missionaries are being assigned to Jamaica.

I have really been thinking about our purpose as missionaries. When missionaries go to a country how long should they stay? Is it sensible for Americans to remain in a place that the organization is up and running on its own? Do we overstay our welcome? Of course by "we" I mean missionaries as a whole in any given country? Is it possible that once the organization is founded, churches are planted, Bible College is established, orphanages are founded and filled to capacity, basic schools and feeding programs are up and running, the national church can fulfil the great commission on their own?

Is it possible that the country can become dependent on the American dollar and personnel and forget that the Great Commission is for every country? Will there come a day when the Jamaican A/G starts sending missionaries to every country? Will there come a day when the Jamaican A/G has to start its own AGWM?

I think that it is possible! Jamaican leadership nows directs the Bible College. The two children's homes (orphanages) are now directed by a national. There are no Americans pastoring a Jamaican church. The Jamaican A/G is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. In 75 years much as transpired, however there are only 70 A/G churches on the island. There is much work to do. I think they are on the way!

God bless Jamaica and I am so grateful we had a small "4 year" part in Bible College students lives. One day, God willing, we will return to see the fruit!
In Jamaica, Labor Day means community building. Different projects are chosen and people come together to WORK! Now that is a twist. In the US we take Labor Day off to REST!

The newspaper puts it this way.."putting labor into Labor Day!" Even the mayors get involved with cleaning, bushing, and painting. One town is cleaning up the community center and giving the town square a facelift. It sounds like the communities basically do "spring cleaning" and doesn't that always make the family feel better!

And so along with all the work comes a lot of lunch! The newspaper calls it "yard food" and it is something different than the curried goat or daily chicken. They prepare protein dishes since so much energy is being expended.

Things like green-banana dumplings, run dung (simmering salt fish with vegetables and seasonings in coconut milk till it cooks down to a custard-like consistency), salt fish and susumber or cod fish and susumber. Susumber is also known as "gully beans." It is a relative of the eggplant.

On Labor Day these meals are prepared in the yard and lots of fruits are on hand, mangoes, star apples, otaheiti apples since all of these are in season for Labor Day. The drink of the day is limade. We don't have lemons so the lemonade is made from limes.

So a little recap of Jamaica's Labor Day, I think I will go get my work gloves and get busy!

These photos are from the newspaper site this evening. Hot off the press. What a great day..
I can't begin to record all of the memories that have been flooding my mind as I think back over my childhood and the influence she had on me. My parents worked alongside Ray and Pauline to build the Assemblies of God church in Mansfield, PA. So I have been told that I was on the church bench nearly the day I was born! My mom and dad had lots of responsibilities in the new church plant so they couldn't miss a Sunday!

I had a great childhood and my church was the best! I loved the pastor's family so very much and spent a lot of time with the Valimont kids. I wore argyle knee socks because Margie did. I played the organ because Patti did, I had a big smile and welcoming demeanor because Connie did, I named my daughter Renee because Pauline did, I thought Jerry was the most handsome guy in town. Connie and I were closest in age and I remember spending many days and hours at their home, riding horses, watching Cinderella, eating, having loads of fun. Pauline was a great mom, a great wife, such a classy lady.

As I think back over my choices that I made as a kid, I can't help but think that this family had great influence over my life. I knew that I wanted to go to Bible College and be in the ministry full time when I was nine years old. They were my pastors till I was around 16.

Pauline was 85 when she passed yesterday and such a beautiful lady. In 2009 Renee and I had to leave Jamaica because of visa issues so we went to Mansfield for a month. While there Mom and I went to see Pauline and we found ourselves gathered around the piano with Patti and Connie singing our hearts out. A great day. One that will live in my memory.

She was widowed for 16 years and still attended the church she and her honey founded. I am so proud to be a "product" of Highway Tabernacle, now named New Covenant. I am so proud that the Valimonts were my pastors. I am sad. I can imagine the reunion yesterday was pretty awesome.

This is a photo that my friend sent me. Pauline on the left, Jane Hart in the middle and Donna on the right. Jane was my second mom growing up and Donna, my still childhood friend!
Some are called to be pastors and evangelists, others fall into a support role to their pastor at home. They come to the college to be further trained in what they sense is a "call" to full time service.

These four years have brought us in contact with some incredible students. Everyone of them have burrowed themselves into our hearts and have become big brothers and sisters to Renee. We will miss them severely. They have been our life for four years, how can we let them go?
Around 35 resident students each year and around 15 night students.

We both taught the resident students, Den taught the night students on Tuesdays. These are vocational students who cannot attend classes in the daytime.

The property was given to the Assemblies of God by Jimmy Swaggert in the eighties. Most of the students come from the coast so when they arrive in Christiana, they have a major adjustment. Christiana is located in the center of the island and in the mountains. It is much cooler than they are used to and more damp. Although the rainy season lasts from June to December, here in the mountains we have rain all year through.

The college has a director who is a pastor and lives far away, an academic dean who lives on campus, professors (who are called lecturers) some are pastors, some are missionaries, some are layman. The college has a cook who comes in each day and prepares lunch. The students do the cleaning and such. So basically the college is run on a shoe string budget and accomplishes what it is designed to accomplish.

While we have been here there have been 2 directors. Rev. Kincaid was the director when we arrived. He is a missionary from England. He is a Jamaican but lived in England for many years and is supported through there. He was also the superintendent of the Jamaican Assemblies of God for many years. He resigned a year ago and the new College Director is Rev. Pitkin, the A/G superintendent and pastor in Montego Bay. I think it might be the norm for the superintendent to be the director. They wear many hats.

In 2007 we came to grips with our time in Springfield coming to an end. The four of us had mixed emotions about the consideration, but really knew it was time to move on. Ryan and Renee, although born and spent their early years in Massachusetts, had grown up in Springfield, Missouri. Eight of their childhood years were spent in Missouri. It kind of makes me chuckle that my babies consider Springfield to be home! What became of my nor'easter babies!

So in 2007, Denny approached his boss about transferring to another field. He enjoyed his work with the Latin America Theological Seminary but knew it was time. He and his boss conversed about many countries and came to the conclusion for us to make a trip to Jamaica and get a feeling whether Jamaica was the place for us. The four of us came, checked it out and came to the conclusion.

So in 2008 after finishing out Renee's 6th grade, Ryan graduating from high school and a quick 6 month itineration to raise the budget we were ready to board the plane. We left Ryan at Valley Forge Christian College on a Tuesday and flew here on a Wednesday. Tough time for sure. We all left crying our little eyes out. The first time we would be without our son under our roof. I will never forget those days. Sometimes I wondered if I would make it. Never realized how difficult it would be to leave him.

We landed just before Tropical Storm Gustav hit the island. We stayed in a hotel for 3 days with no water and electricity. The kitchen was without most food items but they had french fries! I remember eating lots of french fries for our first 3 days!

Our budget couldn't afford more nights in the hotel so we began seeking out a place to live! We didn't know anyone here yet and had no clue where to go! Funny days for sure, now we are so comfortable here.

There was a missionary associate couple working at the Assemblies of God children's home so Den thought, maybe I should give them a call and see if we could stay at the children's home! The American director was off the island so it was probably a burden to the MA's to make the decision, but they contacted the powers that be and said that we could stay in the apartment with them. We were so grateful.

In the meantime, the college had started, we had to get our classes going. Renee's school started 5 days after our arrival, we had to find books, get her uniforms made, get her feeling somewhat settled. We considered ourselves homeless but knew that it wouldn't be forever. We just had to wait till our shipment of belongings got here and we could set up house.
September 13th, 2008 was a great day! We had our stuff, a home, and we could go get some groceries. While we stayed at the children's home we had to eat all of our meals out. I remember one night I needed to do laundry so desperately, we went scouting out a laundry facility. None to be found. We went everywhere, asked around, and none to be found. After living here 4 years, there is still no laundry facility to be found! People must have thought I was a crazy woman! Just find a spigot and a bar of blue soap and lay them in the sun crazy lady!!

We settled into life as we were to know it. God has helped us every step of the way. Some tough days, some tearful days, and lots of happy days. God is so good.
I found it really funny.

1. Dumb Waiter - One who asks if the kids would care to order dessert!
2. Feedback - The inevitable result when the baby doesn't appreciate the strained carrots!
3. Full Name - What you call your child when you're mad at him!
4. Top Bunk - Where you should never put a child wearing Superman jammies!
5. Hearsay - What toddlers do when anyone mutters a dirty word.
